Specifications for Submissions

We welcome articles in English or German that examine Austrian texts in all genres and media critically, from an historical and/or theoretical perspective. We particularly encourage collaborative work among literary scholars, between literary scholars and scholars in other disciplines, and between scholars in the United States and abroad.

Manuscripts are peer-reviewed. Minimum of two evaluations. We follow a policy of blind submission.

Manuscripts should follow the third edition of the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing ( and be double-spaced throughout. Please submit manuscripts (no longer than thirty pages including notes) electronically (attachments in MS-Word or as RTFs). Evaluators' comments plus editor's decision will be sent to the author electronically.

Specifications for Electronic Submission of Accepted Articles

Manuscripts should be submitted as an email attachment in Microsoft Word, Word for Macintosh, or Rich Text Format (rtf).

If you are using MS-Word 2007 or later, please do NOT submit your text as a .docx file; save it as a .doc file and make sure your software's settings make that file back-compatible to Word 97/98.

Journal conventions

Authors should follow MLA (Modern Language Association) specifications. If you are unfamiliar with them, you may purchase the third edition of the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing through their web-site (http://www.mla.org).

The italics feature should be used instead of underlining unless the author intends an underline to appear in the text. Single spaces, not double spaces, should appear after periods and colons. Use double quotation marks for quotations within text and non-book titles and single marks for quotations within quotations.

Endnotes should be used only for parenthetical comments. Authors should include citations in the text and conclude their manuscript with a list of "Works Cited" or "Zitierte Werke" prepared according to the third edition of the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (2008). The list should clearly state the medium of each cited text, e.g., print, web, DVD, performance, etc.

Notes and references

The author must prepare a final version that replaces "embedded notes" generated by the word processor with endnotes and references typed at the conclusion of the article.

Copyright permissions

If permission for reproducing copyrighted material is needed, the author should submit permission with the final copy and diskette. Any fees are the responsibility of the author.

Abstract and Biography

Include a short abstract and a short biography, each in English and approximately fifty words long. Include your email address if you do not object to being contacted by readers who might have questions and comments on your article.

Scans of 35mm film should be made at 2400 dpi/ppi. These are minimum resolutions; larger images are accepted. Image files should be in TIFF or Photoshop format.
